Do more trackers gain more yield in commercial PV systems and solar power plants?

New research by Fraunhofer ISE answers this question in favor of single-MPPT inverters

The study investigates whether and when the use of an inverter with multiple independent DC inputs is worthwhile. The focus of the study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) is on occurring mismatch losses between module strings. However, other effects such as input voltage windows of the inverters, efficiencies and the influence on the system design are also considered. The research specifies the additional yields of multi-MPPT inverters between only 1 to 2% per year in the best cases. It also concludes that those potential yield gains can be offset by the higher efficiencies of inverters with one MPP tracker (single-MPPT).
