Renewable, reliable, and cost-effective: This is the energy supply of the future. To support those goals, a new large energy storage system has been deployed in Falun, Sweden. The system represents a marvel of Swedish engineering skills performed by BatteryGrid Sweden AB. 44 blueplanet gridsave 92.0 TL3-S battery inverters, with a total capacity of 4.0 MW, are the heart of the storage system.

The Swedish grid is at its limits

The increasing penetration of renewable generation, and the difference in power generation and power demand, leads to fluctuations in the grid frequency. Since the frequency is crucial to keep the electricity grid stable, it is vital to keep the frequency close to its ideal value of 50.0 Hz. To foster this purpose, energy storage systems can help: In times of high renewable generation, they can store energy; in times of low generation, they can release energy. By doing this, they keep the frequency close to 50.0 Hz.

 

The energy storage system which keeps the grid stable

BatteryGridSweden AB has recognized the demand for frequency support services. The company located in Falun, Sweden, and lead by CEO Fredrik Ahlsund, has deployed a large-scale battery storage system to participate in the Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR) market – a market designed for services which keep the frequency stable. The energy storage system utilizes first-live battery packs together with highly efficient blueplanet gridsave 92.0 TL3-S battery inverters and modern energy management. The entire system, including the energy management system, is developed by BatteryGrid Sweden AB. The Energy Battery Storage System (BESS) is placed in several containers and comes with advanced safety features like fire suppression systems and remote monitoring.

 

A unique storage system: Big, efficient, modular

The energy storage system consists of 44 blueplanet gridsave 92.0 TL3-S battery inverters – leading to a power of 4.0 MW. As of today, this represents the largest energy storage system with blueplanet gridsave 92.0 TL3-S. The battery inverters’ features form an integral part of the BESS:

  • Efficient: KACO new energy's battery inverters use advanced silicon carbide power electronics that increase efficiency and minimize energy losses. This means that more energy can be used to stabilize the grid frequency.
  • Stable: The use of string inverters leads to higher operating times. If a central inverter fails, a large part of the system can be out of action. With the smaller and lighter string inverters, defective units can be replaced quickly, increasing the availability of the system and thus ensuring continuous support of the grid frequency.
  • Flexible: The modularity of the system allows for easy expansion as demand increases: the system can be easily adapted to new requirements in the future.

The energy market is constantly changing: The trend to larger energy storage systems with string battery inverters is visible all over the world.
